One of the jobs I have been doing recently is dropping grapes. There are a few reasons for this, but they all really come down to quality over quantity. I dropped bunches in the Tempranillo because the vines were producing more bunches then they could support and hence many were not developing properly as the photo above shows. The I dropped nearly a third of the Chardonnay because we had a bad outbreak of Powdery Mildew. I was very happy to do this as I wouldn't want to drink wine made out of those grapes.
However dropping grapes from the Corvina was much more difficult for me. The grapes appeared to be developing well, had very little powdery but I still dropped what I would guess to be a few cases worth of wine in bunches. This was difficult as I love Dads red wine, but I guess the reason I love it is because he would prefer to produce a smaller quantity to increase the quality.
