A second mother goose began nesting, so we put another cage over here. Unfortunately soon after we had 30 ml of rain and a fox was able to dig under the cage and get to the eggs. The same night this happened, eggs from the first nesting goose hatched. Only one of the four goslings survived the night. Now that one gosling has 10 parents, all of which are very protective. One of the ducks came to say hello but was quickly marched away. Even the geese who look after the ducks have abandoned them in favour of the new arrival. I feel a little sorry for the goose who lost her eggs, Xanthe thinks she was swimming on her own on the dam while all the others were clucking over the gosling. We wondered about grief counseling for bereaved mother geese....
Ok so it is difficult to see the gosling in this photo, but the geese are very protective.
